'The Suicide Squad' Empire Magazine Covers and Images Revealed

Empire has revealed their magazine covers for The Suicide Squad, along with exclusive images from the film!

James Gunn, director of Marvel Studios' Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, has taken over from David Ayer for the reboot/sequel follow-up to 2016's Suicide Squad. While Gunn isn't starting completely fresh, he's only bringing back four characters from the original and it's widely believed that the events of the first film will not be mentioned. Empire has begun their first-look coverage at the movie, which released a "roll call" video and behind-the-scenes footage at DC FanDome in august. The regular magazine cover can be seen above, while the subscriber-exclusive cover is pictured below.

Unlike the original Suicide Squad, which saw only two members of the team die, Gunn has said to expect a lot more death and carnage in his movie. He tells Empire, "They don’t just get in fights and say they’re going to kill each other, they actually do get in fights and kill each other. You really don’t know who’s going to live and who’s going to die. I was given full freedom to kill anyone – and I mean anyone – by DC.”

The Suicide Squad has a stacked cast, consisting of major names like Margot Robbie, Viola Davis, Idris Elba, John Cena, Taika Waititi, Peter Capaldi, and Michael Rooker. DC villains featured in the movie include Bloodsport, Peacemaker, the Thinker, Polka-Dot Man, King Shark, Ratcatcher, and many more, while characters Harley Quinn, Amanda Waller, Captain Boomerang, and Rick Flag return from the original Suicide Squad. If the rumors of the movie being rated R are indeed accurate, this will be the second DC Extended Universe film to get an R rating after 2020's Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn, which itself was a Suicide Squad spinoff.

I'm excited for The Suicide Squad, and I think it looks much stronger than the messy 2016 movie. I'm definitely looking forward to Harley Quinn the most, and I'm thrilled that she's got her original black and red color scheme back. What do you think of this second attempt at bringing together DC's villains? Comment below!

The Suicide Squad releases on August 6th, 2021.
