Kara Zor-El is getting ready to make her DCEU debut!
In a surprising turn of events, Sasha Calle has been cast as Kara Danvers for DC's upcoming The Flash film. The movie will center on Ezra Miller's Barry Allen, but will also adapt elements of the Flashpoint storyline from the comics. Calle was chosen out of over 400 actors and will be the first Latina Supergirl in DC canon. The Flash is directed by Andy Muschietti (It and It Chapter Two) and Miller reprises his role as Barry Allen from previous DC Extended Universe films. Calle joins Michael Keaton and Ben Affleck, who are both reprising their roles as Bruce Wayne/Batman from Batman (1989) and Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, respectively.
Kara Danvers grew up as Kara Zor-El on Krypton, and was sent to Earth to protect her newborn cousin Kal-El as her home planet was destroyed. However, after being knocked off course and finding herself stranded in the Phantom Zone for decades, Kara arrived on Earth to discover that her cousin was already protecting the planet as Superman. In the DCEU, Kara crash-landed on Earth thousands of years before Clark Kent discovers her ship in 2013's Man of Steel. The open stasis pod in that scene implies that she's been alive on Earth for a very long time, but Calle's presence in The Flash may retcon this origin.
While The CW has been running a popular Supergirl television show for years that is coming to an end with its sixth season, it's currently unknown how Supergirl will fit into The Flash given that Kara has never been mentioned in the films. Her history with Superman is also likely to remain on the cutting room floor due to Henry Cavill's contentious relationship with Warner Bros. and the questionable future for his interpretation of Superman. If Cavill doesn't return in The Flash, it's difficult to see how Supergirl will fit into the story and how she will be established. The film seems to be becoming a bit overstuffed for Barry Allen's very first solo adventure, but hopefully the additional DC characters will be handled delicately.
I love Supergirl and I'm thrilled to see her coming into the DCEU, but I am questioning her introduction in a Flash movie. I wanted a Supergirl solo movie or a co-starring role in a potential Man of Steel 2, and given the rumors about Supergirl originally being the villain of The Suicide Squad and her solo movie focusing on a teenaged version of the character, I'm worried about the possibility of Kara being too young. I also want Kara to remain with blonde hair in the DCEU. I'm not concerned about Calle not being a natural blonde, but I think the DCEU Superman suit will look far too dark with black or dark brown hair, and I think that Supergirl's blonde hair is an important part of her iconic look. What do you think about Sasha Calle entering the DCEU? Do you think Supergirl has a place in The Flash, or would you prefer it if they saved her for a different DC film? Comment below!

I’m not all that clued into the DCEU, but I’m excited that a Hispanic woman is getting that role!
