The first Fox franchise to get an MCU reboot will be Fantastic Four!
After teasing Marvel's First Family at the 2019 San Diego Comic-Con, Kevin Feige announced today that Marvel Studios' Fantastic Four is coming to the Marvel Cinematic Universe! The new film will be directed by Jon Watts, who has directed all three of Tom Holland's Spider-Man films for Marvel and Sony.
No other information is known at this time, although the film appears to be targeting a 2023 release date since Marvel's 2022 slate is already full. Peyton Reed had been gunning for a Fantastic Four film set in the 1960s that presumably would have tied into the Quantum Realm and his Ant-Man movies, which would have been an incredible tie-in. It's surprising to see Jon Watts selected as the director, especially since his direction on the MCU's Spider-Man films has never been particularly thrilling, although it's not bad. However, the same could be said for Peyton Reed, whose Ant-Man and the Wasp was a solid MCU adventure but quite formulaic and not as unique as it could have been. Reed's schedule is currently full with Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, while Watts is working on Spider-Man 3 right now.
I can't wait for the Fantastic Four to come home to Marvel Studios and finally be done right. I'm glad they're coming in before the X-Men, and it seems like Feige has made an effort to fast-track the project since it's coming out in the midst of several other MCU projects that likely had rough ideas mapped out before Disney acquired 20th Century Fox. It looks like 2023 is shaping up to be another fantastic (pun intended) year for Marvel Studios, with the anticipated releases of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Fantastic Four, and Deadpool 3.
Fantastic Four will presumably be released in 2023.
